Lyonsdown School is a small, friendly school for girls aged three to eleven which, since September 2020, has fully embraced an all-girls education. Situated in the leafy suburb of New Barnet, within easy access to the North Circular and both Northern Line and mainline rail services.
Lyonsdown nurtures both potential and ability, allowing all pupils to thrive and achieve personal excellence. The school is non-selective at entry into Nursery and Reception. Year 6 girls gain entry and scholarships to top London senior schools, both independent (day and boarding) and selective maintained schools.
Class sizes are small with high teacher to pupil ratios, ensuring that both teaching and pastoral care are of the highest standards. A broad and balanced curriculum provides personalised learning with a high degree of specialist teaching. This allows pupils to flourish and discover their passions and abilities, whatever they might be.
Lyonsdown has significant strengths in Music, Drama and Art with recent successes coming in the North London Music Festival and the ISA Art competition and being shortlisted for the National ISA awards. The school runs two lively and popular choirs and individual instrumental lessons are taught by visiting specialists.
“Lyonsdown learning” is at the heart of the school and the pupils develop those skills that will prepare them for their senior school and a life of learning beyond the classroom. They are critical thinkers, exploring their lessons and activities with independence, responsibility and imagination.
The school is housed in a beautiful Edwardian building with modern facilities including a Science Laboratory, Library and Dining Room, an Outdoor Learning Area, Art Studio, Computing Suite and Music Room. Sport is both popular and important at Lyonsdown and the school makes good use of its own purpose-built hall and local facilities for PE and Games.
An extensive co-curricular programme, including breakfast and after-school clubs, traditional dancing, prep club and karate, runs throughout the year. Visiting speakers, theatre groups and workshops are very popular with pupils and parents alike. The school makes excellent use of its location with visits into London are a regular feature of the calendar and Year 5 and 6 pupils enjoy an annual residential trip.
Specialist learning support is also provided to those pupils who need additional focus, be it a specific need such as dyslexia, or for those who need a temporary boost. More able girls have their learning extended in lessons and in a variety of additional activities, and pupils of all abilities are challenged.
Lyonsdown is an inclusive community with a Christian ethos, welcoming a diverse mix of pupils of all faiths. The school is a community of learning and the partnership between home and school is of central importance. Regular communication ensures parents are well-informed and celebrates the pupils’ many successes.
The school is a member of the Independent School’s Association
Charitable status. Lyonsdown School became a member of the Mill Hill School Foundation (Registered Charity, number 1064758) on 1 April 2022.
